Digital Camera Chronicles
22 -- A low point
(Dec 2001)
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Someday we'll be able to look back on 2001 and remember it as a low point, one of the really bad years. Between a dramatically slowing economy, terrorist attacks, wars, and bio scares in our own country, the millennium couldn't have started much worse. About the best we can say is that none of us here at Digital Camera lost a loved one, and that we're still here while some of our competition folded. While we're subdued and definitely feeling the economic and psychological impact of all that happened, we also remain optimistic. Our nation was built not only on the belief in freedom and justice for all, but also on a strong belief in the future and all the promises that it holds. There are struggles now, but they will be overcome.
Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke once said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and I think he was right. Not a day goes by that I don't marvel at the incredible technological and scientific advances we're witnessing right before our eyes. Advances that help people in all aspects of life. While war, terror, and hunger remain a stark reality--and likely will remain so for some time to come--I firmly believe that technology holds the key to a brighter future, a future for all to share.
Despite all the bad news, over seven million digicams will be sold in the US in 2001. So count on us to continue bringing you the latest and greatest from the fascinating world of digital cameras and digital imaging!
